Convocation ceremony

Convocation ceremony: Are students required to wear traditional gowns?

Authorities in colleges in the city are not sure if they have to ask students to come for the convocation ceremony, slated to be held in college premises on either January 24 or February 2, as instructed by Mumbai University, in formal gowns generally worn during the ceremony.

Authorities in colleges in the city are not sure if they have to ask students to come for the convocation ceremony, slated to be held in college premises on either January 24 or February 2, as instructed byMumbai University, in formal gowns generally worn during the ceremony.

While some colleges are worried about how they would get hold of enough gowns for their students, others are left wondering if it's mandatory or not for students to wear gowns for the ceremony, as there are no clear instructions from MU on the matter.

However, MU seems clear about it. For the varsity, it's just a ceremony being held to give away degree certificates, and hence students can come attired in normal clothes; but if colleges want, they can go ahead and hold a grand ceremony, gowns, caps and all!

Dr Harsha Mehta, principal, SIES College, said: "Our teachers are making inquiries whether students are required to wear gowns for the ceremony being held in the college. We are holding the event on Feb 2. I will only come to know on Friday whether students have to compulsorily wear gowns or not."

In the convocation ceremony normally held in Mumbai University campus, students wear the traditional gowns. This will be the first time that the ceremony is being held in college campuses, and hence the doubt on the dress code.

Kiran Mangaonkar, principal, Khalsa College, said: "I am not aware whether students attending this ceremony in college have to wear the traditional gowns or not. We haven't received any instruction on this."

Principal of KC College Manju Nichani said: "In the convocation ceremony held in University of Mumbai, it's mandatory to wear the traditional dress. But at a meeting, university officials have told colleges that since they had only been given a short notice on the ceremony, gown was not compulsory this year."

It's left to colleges
Dr MA Khan, registrar, Mumbai University, said: "The ceremony that is being held in colleges is not a convocation, but a degree certificate distribution ceremony. So, there is no compulsion to wear gowns. Colleges can organise the ceremony in a simple way or hold a grand function. It's left to them."
