MUMBAI: Mumbai University has finalised the seven-day midterm break during Ganesh Chaturthi in the academic time-table for 2016-17. However, it has introduced the 'additional' midterm break without cutting down the Diwali or the summer break in the academic time-table, as was being considered in the initial proposal. City colleges will, therefore, get at least a nine-day vacation, as the first and the last day of Ganpati are anyway public holidays. Around 750 colleges affiliated to Mumbai University will now get a Ganpati break for nine days.

The first term will begin from June 6 and end on October 25 and the second term will commence from November 15 and end on April 30, according to the new time-table. This is more or less the practice every year for arts, science and commerce colleges, said a city college principal. While one midterm break in the second term already existed during Christmas (December 26 to January 1), the university now introduced another midterm break in the first term during the Ganpati festival (September 6 to 12). The University Grants Commission (UGC), however, prescribes 90 working days in each term.
